Red Riding Hood
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (September, 1987)
Author: James Marshall
Average review score:

Old school red riding hood!
Hold onto your hats! This version is the one I grew up with!
Y'know, where RRH and her granny get EATEN! Gasp, swoon! AND its written with the good ol' James Marshall humor. I loved it as an adult. I read it to my 4 yr old preschool class, not knowing it had the "surprise" ending...tee hee...they were a bit shocked to know that RRH and granny get eaten instead of being locked up in the closet or chased around the room. What will their parents think? The room was dead silent when the wolf gobbled them up, humorously, of course. Nah, I recommend this book for those who want to keep up the tradition in the fairy tale world. Thanks, James Marshall, for braving political correctness' delicacy and doing up the true tale just right!

A delight
I can't recommend James Marshall's fairy tale rehashes more enthusiastically. They are SO funny. By all means buy them all for your children. See also "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and "The Three Little Pigs."

Regency Diamonds
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (August, 1994)
Authors: Brenda Hiatt, Paula Marshall, and Harlequin
Average review score:

'The Cyprian's Sister' is excellent
You can pick up any of Paula Marshall's book and find it delightful and enjoyable and I am surprised to find that not many people have reviewed ( read? ) her books. I have only read The Cyprian's Sister in this anthology and would like to recommend it to other readers. The hero , Lord Francis Carey, mistook Miss Bel Passmore , a virtuous vicar's daughter, to be her sister who made her fortune as a Cyprian and out of blackmailing rich protectors. When Bel was sorting out her sister's belongings after her death, Lord Carey barged into her home rudely accusing her of blackmailing his nephew and demanding back the scandulous letters. Deciding to teach him a lesson, Bel played along with him with a bargain and then promptly disappeared. Two years later, they met at his sister's party and Carey decided to carried out his avowed revenge. The sparring , repartee and innuendos are witty and humorous and the sexual tension strong. The passion and emotions became so intense towards the end that they are compelling. I found I could not put the book down.

Two Regency Romances in one book from Harlequin
Harlequin seem to be connected with Mills&Boon an English publisher. Mills&Boon publish a number of their better selling authors in hardcover large print as well as paperback.

Many Harlequin Regency romances are of excellent quality although Harlequin no longer publish a separate Regency line. The gem in these two stories is the Paula Marshall story "The Cyprian's Sister" Miss Bel Passmore inherits her sister's house and goods, Lord Francis Carey arrives, and mistakes her for her sister who was threatening to blackmail his nephew. By its self I'd rate this one 5 stars.

The other story Azeala by Brenda Hiatt is partially set in Williamsburg and partially in London. Features an American heroine and an English hero. When I lived in London I noticed that many Americans are fascinated by street markets, and they turn up in this tale. By itself I'd rate this one 4 stars.

I purchased my copy in January 1999, so the publisher may have a small stock left.

Sci-Fi
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (July, 1981)
Author: William Marshall
Average review score:

A Hong Kong Mardi Gras
This is another superlative police procedural mystery, set in the fictional Hong Bay section of Hong Kong, starring those inimitable Hong Kong police officers, Harry Fieffer (the boss), Christoper O'Yee (Amerasian), and Detectives Auden and Spencer, playing once again their combination of Marx Brothers and NYC's finest. Anyway, in this outing, the boys are challenged by the arrival of a science-fiction convention, with the usual fans dressed up as their favorite aliens, parades, and general mayhem. O'Yee is hunting for...well, we won't spoil it...something REALLY hard to find, while Audena and Spencer are looking for a mugger in a multi-story parking garage. Feiffer is looking for the fiend who is incinerating citizens for no apparent reason.
Marshall once again combines the zany with the suspenseful, and once again my eyebrows are sore from raising them at all the hair-raising (pun intended) hold-your-breath scenes. If you're looking for a great police procedural series, and one that doesn't take itself too seriously, you are in the right place in Hong Bay with Marhall's band of loonies. Long may they reign!

This book should NOT be out of print
Oh man, this is the funniest book in the whole series. Yes, it's part of a series, and the whole series is funny. It takes place in "Hong Bay" precinct in Hong Kong, pre-Chinese-takeover. (The introduction to each book in the series points out that the Chinese could have taken over Hong Kong years ago just by turning off the water tap.) Let's mention here, in case it is not obvious, that nothing in this book actually IS science fiction; it's murder mystery/police procedural.

The characters in the Hong Bay precinct station are a mixed lot of mostly Europeans and Asian-Europeans, or European-Asians, the inhabitants of the precinct are a complete cross section of would-be capitalist Chinese. There is a little bit of stereotyping, with the wily Chinese frequently outwitting the Europeans. Everyone, cop and civilian alike, is just a tad greedy and eager to get ahead or to get something someone else has.

In this particular book, an all-Asia science fiction convention is taking place. Like any science fiction convention, there are people who insist on attending in costume, and there are people who indulge a bit too much in recreational substances. In the opening chapters, we have a wonderful scene where the police station is trying to figure out where to put yet another costumed arrestee; various cells are already holding The Swarm - all of it - and other familiar sci-fi characters. As the new one is a midget, our lieutenant suggests stuffing him in the fire extinguisher closet, since that's the only space left.

I won't give away too much of the plot; let me just say that in addition to the murders, the side plot involving the little old lady piano player in the hotel is definitely worth following.

For fans of police procedurals, and of any murder mysteries, who have also ever been to any convention in a big hotel with a costume party, this is MUST reading- definitely worth doing an out-of-print search on. We have two copies, ha ha, so I can loan one out to friends without the risk of losing our only copy, because there are scenes I like to re-read when I need a good chuckle. The offbeat world of Hong Bay is reliably funny.

Sector Funds for Trophy Returns: A Guide to Investing in Sector Mutual Funds

Very easy read with lots of general advice.
This book was a very easy read. It was written for anyone starting or considering sector investing. I will use alot of the general advice in developing my strategies. While some of the examples are several years old, all of the concepts and stratgies still apply.

Great read for anyone familiar/curious about sector investng
This book is one of the best sources for sector rotation and investing out to date. It is written and organized well with explanations that the investment professional or layman can easily understand. Good charts and easy to understand graphs with occasional humor. I read the entire book over a weekend. I have been doing my own sector plays for years and even I learned some things. I also checked out the books website, which is very professionally done.

Sergeant Presley: Our Untold Story of Elvis' Missing Years
Published in Hardcover by ECW Press (September, 2002)
Authors: Rex Mansfield, Elisabeth Mansfield, and as told to Marshall Terrill and Zoe Terrill
Average review score:

Marshall Terrill is the MAN!!!!!!!
Great read by one the best biographers in the business. I'd even let Terrill write my life story!

Keep up the good work Marshall. I can't wait for the Pete Maravich book!

great story by great people
I had the priviledge to know Rex And Elizabeth Mansfield when my husband was stationed in Germany in the early 90's. They are wonderful people and some of the most down-to- earth people I know. It was exciting to read about a time in their lives that I never really knew about. I knew Elizabeth had dated Elvis but did not realize how close they both were to him. I read every word knowing that it was true because I knew the writers. It gives youa great insight to realize that behind every famous person is just that, a real person, warts and all. I encourage every fan of Elvis to read this book because it is written by people who knew him and loved him.

Singing the snake : poems from the western desert, 1979-1988
Published in Unknown Binding by Angus & Robertson ()
Author: Billy Marshall-Stoneking
Average review score:

A classic work full of stunning poems
I found this book by accident and read it in one sitting... I have read many times since then. I recommend it.

Classic Australian poetry
I would like to commend this book to all readers, whether you like poetry or not. The author, Billy Marshall-Stoneking, is one of Australia's greatest living poets, and here, in his book, Singing the Snake, he has offered poems of genuine feeling and insight. There is real knowledge here, and humour, and voices... one can almost smell the smoke of campfires... and the aroma is entrancing. In these wonderful poems (illustrated by the Pintupi elder, Tutama Tjapangarti) Marshall-Stoneking recounts his time among the Aborigines of Central Australia. This book is destined to be one of the great classics of Australian literature and I have no doubt of the world. It certainly deserves international recognition. His poem, The Seasons of Fire, which is included in this collection was awarded the Bill Harney Poetry Prize. I am pleased to recommend this book.

Social Phobia: From Shyness to Stage Fright
Published in Paperback by Basic Books (June, 1995)
Author: John R. Marshall
Average review score:

Good intro
Wanna know something? I had social phobia and the best thing i could do for myself was read about it.. over and over and over.. various materials, opinions, etc. But reading is only half the battle. the other half is getting out there and actually putting the ideas, such as the ones found in this book to use, then only will you have success. this book won't cure you but it can sure help if you have enough courage to help yourself. i recommend this book strongly.

A Comprehensive Study of Social Phobia
I have social phobia. I have undergone therapy and drug medication in its treatment. I first was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I read this work as I was coming to better understand the true nature of my disorder. If you'd like to understand what my life has been like, please read this book. Marshall's "Social Phobia" is a comprehensive study and explanation of not only the syptoms of Social Phobia, but also a synopsis of current research into the work. Not to suggest that the work is in any way esoteric. Marshall portrays the character of this disorder through numerous case-studies from his work at the Anxiety Clinic at University of Wisconsin - Madison. He first gives a very full picture of how social phobia manifests itself in peoples' lives before going into theories as to why. He is wonderful at telling these peoples' stories. From this starting point, he moves deftly into his academic knowledge of the subject, offering the reader easy access to the professional's knowledge. Marshall's book offers the real-life story of Social Phobia and an objective study of it. I found both of great value; he showed me that there are others out there like me and also helped me to better understand (and thereby recover from) Social Phobia. At the end of the book, he summarizes current treatments of this disorder, offers an Appendix which differentiates Social Phobia from the other Anxiety Disorders, and provides a suggested reading list. Marshall's work has been an enormous help in my own life, and if you wish to understand this disorder, it can be of immense value to you, too.

Spares: The Special Edition
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Connection Press (March, 1999)
Authors: Michael M. Smith, Alan Clark, and Michael Marshall Smith
Average review score:

Mick Farren + William Gibson = Michael Marshall Smith
This is a great primer for Marshall Smith. He's out ofBritain, so some of his stuff isn't available on amazom.com so checkamazon.co.uk. It's worth the extra shipping fees. He's probably the best satirical sf writer out today. No dragons or ogres, just almost normal people in a messed up situation.

If you only own one piece of fiction...
Sheer unadulterated brilliance is what Marshall Smith deliveres here. In a surreal world where people are cloned for spare parts, one man, down on his luck, comes to the rescue of beings considered less than human. Always enthralling, but at times you are unable to tell if this book is incredibly hilarious or really scary. Prepare for the most enjoyable assault on your imagination.

The principles in this book formed the basis of my recovery from a devastating divorce, and began me on a journey back to reclaim hope for a bright future. Tai Chi Chuan with Video
Published in Paperback by Black Belt Magazine Video (March, 1999)
Author: Marshall Ho'o
Average review score:

Excellent visual aid
I came across this book with the help of an advanced student of my Tai Chi class. My Sifu spoke highly of the author. I have found this work very helpful as a beginner. With great photos and directions, this book works well as a home guide for outside training. Along with the video, Tai Chi Chuan provides a sound foundation from Temple Exercises to a complete short form.

Five Star book and video from Hall of Famer Marshall Ho'o
My sifu recommended this as being a video from which I could completely learn a form. He was right! The instruction in the book is detailed and on point. The instruction in the video is not merely a repeat of the book; in combination with the book the video makes the learning process a joy. The T'ai Chi and the instruction is first rate, as you would expect from a master like Marshall Ho'o.
